Originally founded by Polly Holliday as a gathering place for self-proclaimed bohemian anarchists, this infamous nightspot moved to #5 Sheridan Square where it became one of the hottest speakeasys in New York during the
mid 20s. A more detailed history of the place can be found at the "A Week in New York" blog. On March 9 of 1925, Billy
Wynne's band came into the Edison Labs to record two of their arrangements; this was the second of the two. The other side, "Titina," can be heard over at
Aardvark Mastering. This song, a huge hit in early '25, was written by Benny Davis and Joe Burke (also responsible for "Carolina Moon" and
"Oh How I Miss You Tonight"). The arrangement sticks close to the melody for the first two minutes, then takes brief liberty with a noodling sax break. The recording quality, as always, was supurb with the bite of the
trumpets coming through nicely. The surface of the disc was good and smooth, hardly needing any noise reduction.
