"The Musical Yankee"

by Len Spencer

This same Vaudeville bit had been recorded for an Edison 2-minute cylinder in 1905, and Columbia waited an entire year to record it for a 12-inch disc that didn't get issued until the year after that. Waxed in October of 1906, with a large cast playing the part of a Vaudeville audience, Len played two parts on this record: the orchestra conductor and the anonymous "yankee" character who starts out being a heckler and winds up being the star of the show. Since this one played nearly twice as long as the Edison version, you get to hear more instruments and more banter. The disc had only been played a few times and was well cared for, so only minimal noise reduction was needed. (The cylinder version can be heard at the UCSB Special Collection.)
