Early in her radio career, before the advent of electrical recording, "the radio girl" made some records for Gennett in 1922. This is one of them, waxed on June 8th of that year. She was obviously more at home in front of an
electrical microphone backed by a piano, as her later recording work showed, but here she was singing into an acoustic recording horn backed by an orchestra. It's a bit of a strain, but she manages to pull it off just fine. The
tune, from the musical "Shuffle Along" (the first all-black musical following WWI), was written by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake (more info about them can be found
here) and has been recorded many times. This disc was kicked around a little in its time, but played better than it looked,
and while it did need some scratch removal it comes out sounding fine.
