"Oh Mother I'm Wild!"

by Billy Jones

This was recorded for Aeolian-Vocalion in 1919, a year before Billy Jones teamed up with Ernest Hare. It's an entertaining song, energetically delivered. The label credits Jones with writing the song but, as it turns out, that was not accurate - the song was written by Howard Johnson (co-wrote the WWI classic "Where Do We Go From Here" as well as the mid-20s chestnut "I Scream - You Scream - We All Scream For Ice Cream"), Harry Pease (co-author of "Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes" as well as the WWI song "I Don't Want to Get Well"), and Eddie G. Nelson (co-wrote many songs with Pease, including "I'm Not Jealous" and "Peggy O'Neill"). It's a fun tune; Eddie Cantor could have sung this song with equal poignancy, but I don't know if he ever sang it. The record itself had not been played very much so all that needed to be removed was occasional "hiss" and crackle.
