"Who Wouldn't"

by Ben Selvin and his orchestra

No bandleader was more prolific in the 1920's recording studio than Ben Selvin - he recorded under dozens of pseudonyms for practically every label (see Tim Gracyk's article about him at the Red Hot Jazz Archive for more details). Ben recorded this bouncy tune, written by Gus Kan and Walter Donaldson (the guys who wrote "Love Me Or Leave Me", "Makin' Whoopee", and lots more), for Brunswick in July of 1926. The vocalist is uncredited, but I've been told that it is Ben Selvin himself - thanks to "Luis" in Argentina for e-mailing me that detail. The record itself suffers some from the prototypical electric recording process, and has groove stress toward the end, but the spirited performance comes across.
