"Whose Who Are You"

by Duke Yellman and his Orchestra

The "other Duke", who played piano just as the more famous Duke did, seems to have recorded for Edison predominantly and then faded into obscurity during the Depression. He and his band turn in a very nice Charleston number for Edison Labs here, which was recorded on January 11 of 1926. Ray Klages and Jesse Greer wrote this one in late 1925 - this is the same pair that would write "Just You Just Me" a few years later - with some help from Abel Green (who co-wrote "Variety Stomp" and was managing editor of "Variety" - hence the title). The disc itself wasn't in the best of shape, having some water damage, but it tracked OK and cleaned up very well with standard noise reduction.
