Irving Berlin wrote this one from 1920, and it tells the sad tale of a girl playing the "coquette" game a little too close to the line. Billy Jones, half of the "Happiness Boys" (with Ernest Hare), recorded this rendition for Pathe
shortly after the song was published. His delivery is perfectly suited to Berlin's lyric - civil, yet ernest - and the charm of this openly corny ditty is unmarred by time as a result. The disc was played a fair amount, so there's some wear
on the louder passages, but aside from that it's quite clean. Despite the surface noise, typical for Pathe discs, the fidelity of the recording is quite good - also typical of Pathe discs. |
