"Doo Wacka Doo"

by Isham Jones and his Orchestra

Few titles have captured the spirit of a musical era as well as this one. Recorded for Brunswick on November 21 of 1924, this tune written by Clarence Gaskill (known for "Prisoner of Love" and "Sweet Adeline"), Walter Donaldson (prolific sonwriter who penned the evergreens "My Blue Heaven" and "Yes Sir That's My Baby"), and George Horther (co-wrote "And the Band Played On") was given a polished rendition by Jones' band. His was one of the two dance orchestra that helped keep Brunswick in business during the early 20s (Carl Fenton being the other). The arrangement weighs in on the conservative side without being stodgy, which was a lucrative balancing act for those able to pull it off. The recording quality on this side is about as good as lateral acoustic recording ever got, a tribute to the engineers who worked the studios at that point in time. Surface noise has been muted in this sample, bringing more of the music out from behind the groove noise.
