"Girl Trouble"

by Eddie Walters

Haven't been able to find out much about the ukelele-toting Eddie Walters, except that he flourished briefly in 1930 and '31. This song, with music written by Fred Fisher (wrote "Chicago" and "Who Paid The Rent For Mrs. Rip Van Winkle") and lyrics by Andy Rice (wrote "Dust, Dust"), was from the motion picture "Children of Pleasure" (see "MGM Fanatic" for details). Eddie recorded it for Columbia on May 17 of 1930 with a hot-sounding backup band. Eddie's charisma carries the admittedly weak lyric and brings out the catchiness of the melody. He has fun with it, and invites his audience to do the same. Whoever had the record originally played it to death, and it took a fair amount of audio work to bring it back to life, and here are the results - not bad, if I say so myself. (Another of Eddie's performances, with the Charleston Chasers, is on CD - see "The Jazzitoria" for info.)
