"If All Of The Stars Were Pretty Babies (And I Was The Man In The Moon)"

by the Green Brothers' Novelty Band

Although the legendary xylophone virtuosity of the Green Brothers is beyond dispute, I have mostly avoided their records as the arrangements tended to be uninspiring. This is a delightful exception, recorded on December 29, 1926 for Edison Labs. The uncredited vocalists do a pretty good imitation of the Rhythm Boys, the solos are inspired, and the tune itself (written by Billy Rose and Fred Fisher) is snappy as well. The person who originally bought this record played it heavily, but with the right filters it sounds great again. (An interview with a surviving relative of the Green Brothers was broadcast on the Thomas Edison's Attic radio show in August of 2004, and the track listing for an available CD of their work is at Swedish Ragtime.)
