"Speech"

by "the Happiness Boys" (Ernest Hare & Billy Jones)

This has to be one of the strangest records that Billy Jones and Ernest Hare ever recorded together. Written by Cliff Friend and Sidney Clare in 1925 and recorded for the Regal label on August 14th of that year, it was intended as a lampoon of pompous (and semi-drunken) after-dinner speaking. We get a chance to hear Billy Jones do some character voices, which is entertaining in itself. Their accompanist, Dave Kaplan, gets a thorough workout on the keyboard and may be one of the many voices constantly bellowing the song's title. This particular copy required some detailed noise-reduction work and, while some noise remains, the results are quite entertaining (if a little bizarre).
