"Let Me See You Smile (Vaudeville Sketch)"

by Ada Jones and Len Spencer

Before women got the vote, it wasn't often that a female received top billing in a duo with a male - this gives an indication as to how big a star Ada Jones really was. She recorded vaudeville sketches with Cal Stewart, playing "Aunt Nancy" to his Uncle Josh, but she also did a series of vaudeville sketches with Len Spencer on Edison cylinders. They must have sold well, since Edison kept issuing new ones up until the end of World War One. While deliberately corny in the best Vaudevillian sense, this particular recording could also be viewed as thoroughly "racist" by today's standards. Keep in mind that this was considered good clean fun back then - it is best heard with that in mind.
