"On a Little Side Street"

by Ernest L. Stevens

Thomas Edison's personal pianist, i.e. the guy who played behind auditioning singers and made test records to check out new innovations at the Labs, made some very listenable sides for that company while he was there in the early 20s. This was one made on February 14 of 1922 that was issued on both disc and cylinder. This is the disc version, take "E." The song, written by Joseph E. Howard (legendary entertainer, co-wrote "Hello My Baby" and "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now") and Charles K. Harris (prolific writer of "tear-jerker" songs from the 1890s onward, including "Hello Central Give Me Heaven" and "Always In the Way"), has the distinction of being the last song that Ada Jones would record before her untimely death. Ernest Stevens uses the song as an excuse to bring some sweet sounds out of the upright in Edison's studio, and the waltz tune becomes a joyous way to spend three minutes. The record wasn't in too bad a condition, just needing some rumble and crackle removed.
