"Sacred Melodies"

by Robert Trucksess

Guitarists seldom recorded solo work for any label in the acoustic era, unless they were Spanish or Hawaiian. The way that Trucksess plays his guitar on this record is called "American style," which it probably was back in September of 1921 when this disc was recorded. To modern ears it sounds Hawaiian, relying a lot on slide work, and with no blues influence as American guitar styles would later acquire. It's an interesting slice of history, capturing a pre-blues guitar style on record, and it's not a bad acoustic recording at that. The disc was in very nice shape and only required minimal noise reduction to sound good. Considering the low dynamic level of the recorded material, it is a good thing it was pressed using the "new process" lamination: an earlier pressing would have been too noisy. (The flip side of this record can be heard at the Edison National Historic Park Site.)
