"Rufus on the Old Kent Road"

by Rae Eleanor Ball

Most of Rae Ball's records for Edison were light classical "dinner music", musically uninteresting but apparently sold quite well in their time, but this self-composed ditty is a delightful exception, waxed for Edison Labs on September 21 of 1923. It is a joyous recording, played with a capricious spirit, and is downright infectious. The middle part sounds more like the typical Rae Eleanor Ball record, lingers there just long enough, then returns to the joyful jig. I don't know if Ms. Ball recorded any more tunes like this, but I don't think she did (email to the contrary is welcome). The surface of this Edison disc was in good condition, needing only rumble removal and not much else.
