"Ritzi Mitzi"

by the Oriole Terrace Orchestra

This tune was a big enough hit to be covered by nearly every dance orchestra there was back in 1923. Howard Johnson (who also wrote "M-O-T-H-E-R"), Irving Bibo (co-author of "Profiteering Blues") and Con Conrad (co-wrote "Margie" and "MA!") wrote it in early 1923. This treatment, recorded for Brunswick on July 9 of that year, was one of the more musically interesting if only for the variety of instruments that take solos after the melody is established: accordion, banjo, plus the tenor sax and muted trumpet thrown in now and again. This band must have been fun to watch. Brunswick's acoustic recording engineers did a great job capturing the band's full sound: Brunswick's first electric sides, made about two years later, did not sound this good. The surface of the record was in great shape, needing only an occasional click or pop removed from the sample.
