Haven't been able to find out much of anything about Billy Watkins, but the song itself (written by Alfred Bryan and Fred Fischer) seems to have gotten around more than the singer did. It was in a Broadway musical, "The Belle of Bond Street" (see the "Internet Broadway Database" for more details), and a young Al Jolson was singing it on stage as well. Columbia could have chosen him to record it, as he had been in their studios some months earlier, but Watkins was the artist they chose to record it for them that year. Al wound up recording it decades later. Aside from a little needle wear in the first few grooves, this is a well-balanced recording with a fairly clean surface - and the obscure Billy Watkins does the song justice. |
