"Red Lips - Kiss My Blues Away"

by the Wanderers

Recorded on April 7 of 1927, this was issued on three dime-store labels at once - Cameo, Romeo, and Lincoln - and this was the Lincoln issue. The identity of the players on this issue is nowhere to be found on the label, but it's actually one of the many Sam Lanin bands (thanks to Luis for that information). The vocal is credited to a Les Reis, which may be a pseudonym for Sam himself. It's a good tight band, consistent with Lanin's other records, and the solos are great. The song was written by Pete Wendling (a ragtime pianist of note, also co-authored "Take Me To the Land of Jazz" and "Oh What a Pal Was Mary"), Alfred Bryan (co-writer of "I'm On My Way to Mandalay" and "The High Cost of Loving"), and James Monaco (co-wrote "Ah-Ha!" and the evergreen "You Made Me Love You"). The record itself got played a lot in its life, so even with noise reduction you will hear lots of wear, but it is still a good improvement and sounds great given the shape the disc was in.
