by Billy Wynne and his Greenwich Village Inn Orchestra
This briskly-played arrangement of a very popular tune was recorded for Edison Labs on November 18 of 1924 by one of the many house bands at the Greenwich Village Inn (#5 Sheridan Square in NYC, originally quoted in the
1926 Gotham Guide as being the "smartest place in the Village"). The song was written by Robert King (co-author
of "I Need Some Pettin'") and Ray Henderson (co-writer of many evergreens such as "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue" and "Varsity Drag"), and was part of a successful run of a Broadway version of J.M. Barrie's book over at the
Knickerbocker Theatre as well as a silent film for Paramount. Other bands recorded it as well, including Waring's Pennsylvanians for Victor and
Bennie Krueger for Brunswick. This version does some interesting ensemble passages, as a hotel dance band would, but no solos. The record itself
had been played, but on good equipment, so a once-over with noise reduction was all that was necessary.
