"Poppies"

by Joe Roberts

A contemporary of Eddie Peabody and Harry Reser, though with much less recorded output, the reputation of Joe Roberts has remained high among banjo players (see "The Banjo Man.com"). This is one of only two sides that Roberts recorded for Edison Labs - this one was issued on both disc and cylinder, the other ("Chung Lo") was issued on cylinder only, and both were recorded on 13th of June in 1922. Whether or not you've tried to play the banjo yourself, and know how difficult it can be, the fluid passages on this record are phenomenal. This disc was well taken care of in its day, and hardly needed any noise reduction.
