"The Pidgeon Walk"

by Byron G. Harlan and Will Robbins

One of the many dance-craze songs from the pre-WWI period that featured animal names in the title, such as the "Grizzly Bear," "Bunny Hug," and the "Turkey Trot." This one is more obscure, written in 1915 by James V. Monaco (co-wrote "Ah-Ha!" and "Dirty Hands, Dirty Face") and Sam M. Lewis (co-author of "My Mother's Rosary" and "Isch GaBibble - I Should Worry"). Count Basie recast the tune in 1937 under the title "Time Out" according to David Oliphant's book Texan Jazz. Harlan and Robbins had very different vocal styles, and only did two sides together in March of 1915 for Columbia, this being one of them (the other, "By Heck," is in my archives). The record from which this came had some heat damage around the outer edge but that gets better as the record progresses.
