"Oh Say, Can I See You Tonight?"

by the Golden Gate Orchestra

To paraphrase Shakespeare, "the California Ramblers by any other name still sound as sweet." This side for Edison Labs, with a vocal by the ever-present Arthur Hall, features some great solos after the melody is established - Red Nichols is probably doing the trumpet solo, while the muted trombone is likely a young Tommy Dorsey and his brother Jimmy turning in an alto sax solo. It was recorded on July 15 of 1925, taking full advantage of the full four minutes of playing time that Edison discs allowed. The record this was sampled from had been played a lot, but thankfully not abused, so the grooves were fairly noise-free. Clicks and rumble were easily removed from this sample. (More samples of their work can be heard at the "Red Hot Jazz" web site.)
