"On the Banks of the Ohio"

by Clarence Green

About the time Clarence sings the line, "across her throat I drew a knife", you realize this is not a typical romantic ballad. Clarence Green, a native of western North Carolina who played the fiddle as well as the guitar heard here, sings this crudely but effectively in a way that sounds like he just stepped off of someone's front porch. Columbia recorded this on November 5 of 1927, nearly a full year before his next session for Columbia. The original owner of this record must have played it once and put it away - the grooves are spotless, needing only rumble reduction and click removal. (Another track of Green's, "Johnson City Blues", has been reissued on two CD compilations - one called "Old Time Mountain Blues", and the other (now out of print) titled "White Country Blues, 1926-1938" - also, a sample of Green's "Good Night Darling" can be found on the incredibly prolific Honking Duck web site.)
