"It Ain't Gonna Rain No Mo'"

by Wendell Hall

Sheet Music Cover Courtesy of Black Satin Collectibles This adaptation of an old folk song put Wendell Hall on the map, and paved the way for ukelele-toting minstrels that followed such as Nick Lucas and Cliff Edwards. Most people are more familiar with the Victor recording of this song (see Brad The Impaler's web page for an audio sample of that), but this Edison Diamond Disc, recorded on October 4 of 1923, interpolates "I'm a Red Headed Music Maker" plus a short monologue to take advantage of the longer playing time. The result is a miniature version of what Wendell's stage show must have been like - a very entertaining record. This is take "C", the last of three takes recorded of this tune. There's some groove stress in the last thirty seconds or so, most likely from being played a lot on the wrong type of machine, but noise filtration has helped a lot.
