"Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray"

by the Utica Institute Jubilee Singers

This title, and every other record that this quintet put on wax during the 1920s, has been issued on CD by Document (available directly from Document-Records.com): However, the record that was sampled for that CD was in terrible condition - even worse than this copy, itself certainly far from ideal - so, with full respect to Document, I am posting my marginally-better sample. The name and repertoir of this group was largely inspired by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and the man who organized it - Dr. William Holtzclaw, author of the book "Black Man's Burden" (available on-line at Google Books) - became a seminal figure in the history of Black education. The singers are capable, genuine, and sing from the heart. The Victor record from which this was sampled had lots of scratches, needing heavy noise reduction to tame it, and the end result is vastly improved.
