"Mr. and Mrs. Murphy"

by Ada Jones and Len Spencer

From about 1902 to 1912 or so, Ada and Len were the performers of choice for the three major recording companies (Columbia, Edison, and Victor) when a Vaudeville sketch needed to be released on a phonograph record. This one, waxed for Victor on December 15 of 1905, was one of a series of Irish sketches that were very popular back then: the portrayal of ethnic stereotypes, including the Irish, was good box office at that time and place. This side was kept in the catalog for many years, appearing in Victor's listings as late as 1917, and this pressing dates from that period. It reproduced well once a needle was found that rode the clean part of the groove. Noise reduction was only needed to treat regular surface noises.
