Fred Fisher (the guy who wrote "Chicago") wrote this in early 1924, and seems to have been a minor hit - several orchestras recorded it, including the bands of Paul Specht and Ray Miller. Nathan Glantz, a New York saxophonist whose band recorded for
several labels, turns in a lively version for Edison Labs which was recorded on March 7 of that year. It alternates between an Egyptian motif and a straight-ahead American four-beat rhythm. One can imagine the sort of sultry dance that a flapper of 1924
might do to this number. This Diamond Disc has been played a fair amount, so there is some wear on the louder parts, but it's still in good enough shape to be enjoyed. (Ray Miller's version, not nearly as imaginative, is available as a RealAudio sample
on-line at Red Hot Jazz Archive.)
