"My Beautiful Mexican Rose"

by The Top Notchers

Proving that early 20s dance orchestras could and would make a dance tune out of anything, this reworked version of "Cielito Lindo" was published by Irving Mills (who also functioned as Duke Ellington's publisher), Max Dolin (Victor label bandleader), and Paul Ash (bandleader who recorded for Brunswick). It doesn't seem to have made much of an impact: Ash recorded it for Brunswick, Dolin's version from 1921 (titled "Cielito Lindo") was released from Victor's vault in '24, and this version was waxed for Edison Labs on April 24 of 1924 which makes it the only version not recorded by the co-authors. This anonymous studio band did kick it around quite a lot and had some fun with it (as much fun as Edison would usually allow, anyway). The disc had been played with some rough equipment once or twice, but it wasn't too badly damaged. After some rumble and scratch removal this sample sounds good again.
