"Marriage Blues"

by Joseph Samuels Jazz Band

Joseph Samuels co-wrote this tune in 1919 with the Berkin brothers, Jules and Herman, both of whom played with Mamie Smith's band at one point or another (Jules played trumpet, Herman played drums). Since Samuels directed Mamie's band for Okeh recording sessions, as well as his own, it was only natural that he would record this song with his own band - which he did in May of 1920. It's a nice example of early Jazz, from a time when the blues was fast becoming a marketing phenomenon. Nathan Glantz can be heard on saxophone, and Harry Raderman might be sitting in the trombone chair. The surface had seen some wear but it was clean enough to get a very nice sample out of it. Okeh's recording method was quite good, especially in the lower midrange frequencies, and it winds up being a very enjoyable acoustic recording.
