These five recording veterans, and the arrangements they invented, revolutionized quartet singing during the mid 1920s. Many of their Victor recordings have been reissued on CD (more info can be found about that
here), as has "Old Man River" which is the A-side of this record, but this classy B-side has not been reissued yet as far as I know. The
song, written by Thekla Hollingsworth and Jesse L. Deppon (the same pair who wrote the wildly popular "Oh Miss Hannah", which the Revelers also recorded), is along the same lines as "Mighty Lak a Rose" - a romanticized
negro courtship song, the sort that Paul Robeson elevated to high art during the late 20s and early 30s. This particular record was in better shape than usual, with a little crackle but not too much, and cleaned up well
