"A Talk On Married Life"

by Murry K. Hill

One of Murry's best comedic monologs, this was preserved on wax several times on both cylinder and disc, and this was the most popular of the disc versions recorded for Victor on November 9 of 1911. There's actually two shorter monologs strung together here - the "married life" monolog and the poem "Life is a Game of Cards". Truly eternal subject matter. While some of Hill's material has not aged well, it was light-years ahead of anything else being billed as "comedy" at that time and place. The works of the Marx Brothers are a more worthy comparison. The disc itself has some needle wear at the very beginning, which smooths out within the first thirty seconds, and while it took some detailed noise reduction work to tame the grooves it was indeed worth it.
