A Russian theme permeates this record, similar to the Waring's Pennsylvanians novelty hit "Bolshevik" (which can be purchased at
"Amazon.com"), though this novelty number pre-dates Waring's record by two months. Bandleader George Olsen, later known as
one of the "sweet" band leaders who found work right into the late 40s, led an uptempo dance band during the mid-20s when this was recorded for Victor on June 30 of 1926. Henry Tobias (co-wrote with his brother Charles such
songs as "Along Came Love" and "Girl Of My Dreams") and Benee Russell (co-wrote "I'll Love You In My Dreams" and "On the Wrong Side of the Fence") wrote the song and it was prolifically recorded, including a re-do
after World War Two by Vaughn Monroe's band. This record had been played quite a bit, and had lots of surface noise in the beginning, so filters were used to diminish that problem. The sample is much improved.
