Bennie is chiefly known as the guy who played sax with the Original Dixieland Jass Band - practically at gunpoint, but that's another story. He also recorded with his own orchestra on the Gennett and Brunswick labels. This Gennett
side is a very good example of what recorded "jass" sounded like in 1922. Sonically, it's also a nice example of pre-electric recording technique. Despite some wear that shows itself now and again, this is quite listenable. (Read
