One of the few Uncle Josh records that was not a monologue, this Victor record from 1904 features someone else playing his nephew Henry (Steve Porter, possibly?) and a full range of sound effects. Besides this being one of the few Victors
to feature an announcement (by "Mister Cal Stewart"), the trademark Uncle Josh laugh is different on this record than others I've heard. It's either before Cal perfected his famous laugh, or it's someone else masquerading as Cal Stewart.
In every other respect, though, it sounds like the Cal Stewart we know and love. (An on-line copy of Cal Stewart's book of Uncle Josh stories can be found at the
University of Virginia, and CDs of other Uncle Josh records are available on-line at Loran Hughes'
"Old Crank" website.)
