"I Still Love You"

by the Radiolites

Written by Milton Ager and Jack Yellen (the same pair that wrote "Happy Feet" and "Crazy Words Crazy Tune"), this pop tune of 1928 had been a hit for Nick Lucas on Brunswick. Columbia needed a version of the song so a group of studio musicians, "the Radiolites," made one on January 21 of that year. It is not known who was playing at the time, though such future luminaries as Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey sat in on later discs recorded under the "Radiolites" moniker, but the ever-present Sam Lanin directed the band and the equally-ever-present Harold "Scrappy" Lambert handles the vocal. The disc from which this was sampled had lots of crackle in it and, when this was removed, a remarkably clean recording emerged from behind the noise. Great stuff.
