This merry song from 1922 was recorded by the tenor half of the "Happiness Boys" for an Edison Diamond Disc on March 10 of that year. Written by Albert Von Tilzer and Lew Brown (two giants of Tin Pan Alley who had also written
"Oh By Jingo" and "Wait Until You Get 'Em Up in the Air Boys"), it is an example of the "going back to the old home sod" sort of song that was extremely popular in Vaudeville performances: an entertainer could be assured of touching
a few hearts in the audience. Stereotyping is part of the package, but the consumate professional Billy Jones serves it with a generous helping of corn and sells it like a classic. This particular disc was a favorite of mine when
I first began listening to Edison discs, and while it has been played quite a lot it has not worn out by any means: all it needed was rumble removal, which is typical of Edison discs, and this sample was good to go.
