"In And Out"

by the Tuxedo Syncopaters

This is the kind of one-step dance music that inspired the creators of the Warner Brothers "Looney Tunes" cartoon theme as well as countless Broadway melodies. Written by Joseph Samuels in 1919, it was recorded by this studio band for Pathé in August of that same year. Only one other recording of this tune, for Emerson, seems to have been made. This is probably not too far from what a Broadway pit orchestra sounded like at that time, with lots of Ragtime inflection but no jazz or blues yet. The record was in pretty good shape, so there was just the normal Pathé surface noise to deal with - that has been tamed, though not eliminated entirely, and the disc is now a listenable slice of history.
