"Don't Take Me Home"

by Bob Roberts

Courtesy of the Lester Levy Collection Songs about hen-pecked married men were quite popular in the Music Hall & Vaudeville tradition. This one was written in 1908 by Harry Von Tilzer (music) and Vincent Bryan (lyrics), the same team that would give us "Cows May Come and Cows May Go". Bob Roberts was usually chosen to record such numbers for both Edison and Columbia, and he does so on this Columbia cylinder with his usual lead-footed grace. This is the Oxford Indestructible version, marketed through Sears-Roebuck. The surface suffered from mold exposure, but it didn't fare as badly as a wax version would have; it is still listenable, after some careful noise reduction work.
