"H-A-S-H (That Am The Word I Love)"

by Arthur Collins

The irrepressible Arthur Collins dons burnt cork once again and renders yet another "coon" song to the delight of his turn-of-the-century audience. Though the defamatory racial stereotype did not age well (to put it mildly) Arthur's 1908 performance retains its innocent charm. This obscure tune was recorded on a 2-minute Albany Indestructible cylinder, and I have not been able to find out the song's authors. What's more, this song seems to have been recorded only one other time - as part of a Minstrel Show - and Arthur sang it on that recording as well (thanks to "Rocky" for that information). The cylinder itself was treated badly in its time, and noise reduction was not able to get rid of all of the defects, but it remains an interesting glimpse into early recorded history.
