"It Had To Be You"

by Marion Harris

An evergreen song if there ever was one, this gem by Isham Jones and Gus Kahn has been performed almost continuously since its publication in 1924 (Harry Conick Jr. being one of the most recent to sing it). Brunswick chose their newly-signed Marion Harris to record it - she was one of the first white women singers to break the Victorian mold and convey some real feeling. She sings the verse as well as the chorous, which is a treat as most performances leave the verse out. The disc wasn't played very much, so the surface of this example is relatively clean - some wear on the louder passages is the only flaw here. (Lyrics to the song are provided on-line by Grandpa Schober.)
