"In Your Green Hat"

by the Tennessee Happy Boys

Dance tempo had been "kicked up a notch" in 1926, to a brisk two-step, and this number by one of Harry Reser's many recording bands is an excellent example. Recorded for Edison Diamond Disc on January 6 of 1926, this freshly-minted tune by the songwriting team of Jack Yellen and Milton Ager (who would later write "Happy Days Are Here Again") was only a modest hit but the band's jazz sensibilities and precise execution make this side very listenable. Arthur Hall's vocal is old-school Vaudeville but doesn't distract. The "mystery noise" gets lots of exposure on this side, toward the end of the record, and it sounds like a duck call cupped with the hand - that's my guess. The record itself had seen a little wear but it was still in very nice shape and only needed a little noise reduction.
