A classic patriotic song from the turn of the 20th century, and aged very well after more than a hundred years, it was written by Theodore Morse and Jack Drislane (a prolific sonwriting pair who also wrote "Keep On the Sunny Side"
and "In Monkey Land"). Byron Harlan had also recorded this tune for Edison cylinder, and a sample of that is on-line at
Cylinder Library at UCSB.edu, but this is the rarer Zonophone issue. It is
also the only record I've ever heard by Byron Harlan where he makes a mistake: he overshoots the note at the end of the phrase, "on the land and on the sea." The company issued the record anyway in spite of this missed note. The disc
from which this is sampled had been treated roughly, but still had some life in the groove. Some of the noise has been removed from the sample but most remains in order to not interfere with the music.
