Before these two guys adopted the trade-name of "The Happiness Boys," bestowed on them by their sponsor "Happiness Candy Stores," they were performing together on record. This is an Okeh recording from May of 1921, five
months before their radio show started in October, but their style of mutual hucksterism and monkeyshine is much in evidence. The recording is as rich as lateral acoustic reproduction ever got. This song, written by Irving
Berlin, was a hit for some months; Marion Harris's version for Columbia was recorded in December of '20 (that can be heard over at Red Hot Jazz.com).
This record was cracked but lightly played, so it was worth salvaging with a dot of super-glue on the edge. (More reading about these two guys can be found at
Wikipedia.)
