"If I Get A Sweetie Now"

by Art Gillham (the Whispering Pianist)

During the early days of radio, Art Gillham plied his crooning trade so successfully that he spawned an entire generation of soft-spoken genteel entertainers - Whispering Jack Smith, Gene Austin, "Confidential Charlie" (Irving Kaufman's alter-ego), and many others engaged in the sincerest form of flattery to this man. Here's one he co-wrote with Billy Smythe (who also co-wrote "Deacon Told Me I Was Good" with Art, and "Hesitation Blues" with J. Scott Middleton eleven years earlier) and recorded for Columbia on October 18, 1926. Art reaches the limits of his vocal skills here, which he himself admitted weren't that good, but the piano playing on this record is great and does the bouncy tune justice. The record had been played quite a bit, but cleaned up very well with some careful noise reduction treatment and is now very listenable. (George Blau, a long-time friend of Art's, has some invaluable info posted for further reading.)
