"Georgette"

by the Oriole Terrace Orchestra

Featured in the "Greenwich Village Follies" of 1922, this was the first hit song by the songwriting team of Lew Brown (co-wrote "Don't Bring Lulu" and the evergreen "Sonny Boy") and Ray Henderson (co-author of Tin Pan Alley standards such as "Bye Bye Blackbird" and "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue") and was recorded many times. This is the version for Brunswick, recorded in May of 1922, and the engineers did themselves proud with this well-balanced and natural-sounding side. This band was one of the few fronted by two men - Dan Russo and Ted Fiorito. The orchestration is very "white", but has an uncommonly joyous level of syncopation that makes it very listenable eighty-plus years later. The tuba break toward the end is one of the many highlights of the performance. The disc itself was treated kindly, so though there was some wear there were no scratches - noise reduction was used sparingly.
