"(I Just Wanna Be Known As) Susie's Feller"

by The Ramblers

This is actually a side by the California Ramblers, moonlighting for the Romeo label while recording for nearly every other label under the sun. The personnel on this side includes Ed Kirkeby on the vocal, but aside from that it could be anybody: both Dorseys, Adrian Rollini, and Red Nichols (that guy got around!) were in and out of this band. Thanks to Art Garland for filling in the info I was missing. (The Red Hot Jazz Archive has a huge listing of the various pseudonyms and recorded output for this group.) One of their pseudonyms was the "Varsity Eight", and this same side was released on the Cameo label under that name - using that info, I was able to find the recording date of November 3 of 1926. The early electric recording equipment adds a little distortion, but overall it's a good side and well balanced. Aside from a rim chip, making the first few grooves unplayable, this disc is remarkably clean and only needed the slightest amount of noise removal.
