"Etiquette Scene"

by Joe Weber and Lew Fields

These two guys were theatrical legends through the late 1890s and early 1900s, and had rapid-fire banter down to a science. The pair quarreled and split up in 1904, bringing a theatrical empire down with them, but they reunited in 1912. This side was recorded on disc for Columbia soon after, on March 7, 1912. It is one of the few Columbias I've seen where the artists sign the wax ouside the label. The disc surface has a fair amount of static, but I was judicious with the noise removal in order that their banter could be more understandable. (For more about Weber & Fields, see "Prarie.org", and Slider Encyclopedia - a further article by Jeffrey Stanton includes a vivid slice-of-life episode from Weber & Fields' early career.)
