"He's a Cousin of Mine"

by Clarice Vance

Sheet Music Cover courtesy of the Lester Levy Collection A highly regarded vaudeville comedienne who "did a Seinfeld" and retired at the top of her game. This song, with lyrics by Cecil Mack and music written by Chris Smith and Silvio Hein, was also covered by Bert Williams and much later by Sam Cooke (who claimed to have written it!). This song lent itself well to Clarice's style of "speak-singing" - this was actually very difficult to pull off in the days of acoustic recording. She does so with grace and charm on this record, done for Victor in 1906. The surface of the disc is noisy, which is true to form for early Victor pressings but even more so if the record has been mistreated. Some judicious noise reduction has improved its listenability, pulling more of the music out from behind the static. (For further info about Damme Clarice, see the "Vaudeville Museum", and the excellent biography by Sterling Morris - also check out further sound samples of Ms. Vance at the following sites: Edigraph ("Save Your Money"), and Tinfoil ("Mariar").
