"Charleston Baby of Mine"

by Mike Speciale and his Orchestra

Courtesy of the Sheet Music Center Danny Dougherty and Bernie Grossman wrote this tune in late 1925, and it was promptly recorded for many labels - this is the version recorded for Cameo on October 2 of that same year. The bandleader, Mike Speciale, led the house band at the Hotel Carlton in New York (on East 29th). The band made a number of sides for Edison around this time, but also made a few for Cameo apparently. His band rips into this tune and does a great job with it - the trumpet work near the end is a highlight. This record got played a lot, so it took some time to clean it up with noise reduction - in the process, what started out sounding like an acoustic record blossomed into what must be a very early electric recording (there is some distortion that no acoustic recording would exhibit, and a fair amount of bass response was also revealed). In the end, after some EQ and noise reduction, a very listenable record indeed.
