Few comedians in the Victorian era would have been so brazen as to open their act the way Murry opens his on this record, by yelling at the orchestra conductor to "shut up" - many other comedians have done this since, but Murry was the first (on record at least),
waxing this for Edison Labs on a 4-minute cylinder in April of 1909. His outspoken stand against women's rights on this record (and others) must be not be taken seriously - it should weighed against the fact that he is, after all, a comedian and would have taken the
stand necessary to relax his audience and keep the laughter coming. That said, this is one of Murry's more obscure recordings and interesting for that reason alone. The cylinder from which this was sampled was only played once or twice in its life, so there was
no surface noise to speak of.
